Synopsis

En Magasin

A short fantasy/fable with a musical comedy style about an imaginary family living in a large department store. The parents have a difficult time convincing their daughter to stay with them at the store, she wants to see what exists beyond...

A fantastic film that enchants, mocks, and surprises. Working with rarely used animation techniques of movement and emotions as all the images were captured in the camera at carrying speeds. Here is a short film about the consumer's uses and abuses inside a lovely story that is sure to please everyone.

To establish a parallel universe around the story's unreal characters in the store, all scenes were photographed at other speeds than the normal 24 frames per second. The main performers slowed their movements to the point where they sometimes would take two minutes for a specific gesture that would translate to two seconds of screen time. An intervalometer created by NFB engineers was taken off dusty shelves for the love of film making. Norman McLaren who worked with the very same equipment was a great inspiration for this film.
